A 3D scan is performed by scanning the test object's surface with a profile recorder. The resulting set of profiles fully and accurately describes the 3D surface of the object. Below, a 3D scan obtained with the RECTA-Profile system. The scan was performed on the edge of a cut blank, 450 mm long (1.5 foot), and 3.2 mm thick (1/8 inch). The scan was performed in less than one minute. The scan indicates a tear zone, seen as jagged peaks in this graph. The scale at the right of the plot can be used to determine that these peaks are about 1/100 mm (0.4/1000 inch) in size. The damaged region ends in a bevel, which is strongly magnified on the picture. The angle of the bevel here is 4°.
