A robot is inspecting tapped holes.
More and more frequently, parts may be manufactured in one spot to be assembled in another one, possibly very remote. When such is the case, the cost induced by bad quality may reach high levels.
This is what happens with the mechanical cases in automotives: engines, gear box casings etc. The hole may be tapped here to be assembled in a remote location. More distance makes any problem a serious one.
Thus, defects have to be avoided.
The problem is now, how to inspect each and every tapped hole with sufficient speed and reliability?
Most often the operators perform a statistical inspection by screwing a gauge in each tapped hole to be controlled. Since each hole requires 15 to 20 seconds, only one part out of 20, 50 or maybe 100 will be inspected.
Today for the first time you can have a robot perform the inspection of every tapping at the required rate!
Satimage et ABB demonstrated on the new Machine Vision Area in the Exhibition "Industrie 2004" in Paris the robotized inspection of tapped holes.
