Technical foundations
Industrial machine vision (or: vision) uses image processing to achieve some function for some industrial purpose. An array video camera captures images. A specialized software processes automatically the images and takes actions depending on the results of the computations. Machine vision is a mean for automating operations such as sorts, inspections or adjustments.
Specific features
Using images from a camera as its input makes machine vision a technique which is:
-
fast
images are processed at a typical rate of 60 per second - sometimes faster
-
without contact
the sensor lasts longer, the inspected part remains untouched
-
with a broad range of applications
vision systems can measure, quantify or check most of the features that are visible or can be viewed by an optical system
