Spell checker 2.0.3, Read me, April 2006

Overview

Spell checker is an addition to Smile (a User script) to check spelling. Spell checker uses and includes XSpell.osax, a Scripting Addition by Jean-Baptiste Le Stang. Check the latest version of XSpell.osax and more cool software by Jean-Baptiste at lestang.org.

Spell checker's interface is particularly light, you control it from the keyboard, using only a very few keys.

Release notes

1.0.0: first public release.
1.0.1: checking starts at the current selection. User dictionary. Visualization of the word currently checked.
1.0.2: the user dictionary is now stored as a file in the user domain (it does not clutter the global context). Keyboard shortcut: cmd-';'.
1.0.3: Check spelling now always checks the front window. If you close the window currently checked, Check spelling will check the next window.
1.0.4: allow more CPU time for the final sound.
2.0: now using the 2.0 version of XSpell.osax. You can now select the language for the check. Selecting Check Spelling in the menu is now different from pressing ⌘; Check spelling now always checks the window which was the active window when it was launched.
2.0.1: better compatibility with non-US keyboards.
2.0.2: does no longer choke on the French single quote ("qu'est-ce ?")
2.0.3: fixed an irrelevant error message when opening the dialog by selecting Check Spelling in the menu.

Installation and requirements

Spell checker is for MacOS X 10.3.9 and higher.
Spell checker requires Smile 3.0 regular edition or higher.

Follow the instructions below to install Spell checker.

If you have not downloaded Spell checker yet, click here to go to the download page, and download Spell checker.
If Smile is running, quit Smile.
Double-click the Installer found in the download. This will install a new Check spelling menu command in Smile's user script menu (the menu with an parchment icon), and it will install XSpell.osax 2.0 in your user domain, in:
/Users/<login>/Library/ScriptingAdditions/
Launch Smile to experiment your new Check spelling menu command.

Instructions of use

To check the spelling in the active window in Smile, set the insertion point before the text to check then press the keyboard combination cmd-semicolon (⌘;).
When Check spelling detects a misspelled word, it highlights the word in the text and prints a list of suggestions in the Console. You have 60 seconds to take whatever action you want such as correcting the word. Then press the right arrow key (‣) to resume checking, or press the escape key (esc) to terminate the check. To enter the current word into the user dictionary, press shift + right arrow (⇧‣).

Closing the "Message" floating window does not terminate the check. You do have to press esc to terminate Check spelling in the middle of a text.

The user dictionary is a list of words that Check spelling will consider valid. You can edit the dictionary to disable some words, or to add a list of words. The dictionary is stored in:
/Users/<login>/Library/Application support/Smile/Spelling dictionaries/user dictionary
By default, Check spelling checks in multilanguage mode. In multilanguage mode, Check spelling guesses the language. To set it to work in a specific language, select Check spelling in the User scripts menu.This will not launch a check: instead, a dialog window opens, where you can select the language, and you can also launch the check.
